BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts made the top three in a new study revealing the healthiest states in the United States.
The online fitness resource, Total Shape, conducted the study by analyzing data on various health indicators in each state. Gym memberships, amount of gyms per 100,000 people, the percentage of adult smokers, and obesity rates in each state were a few of the indicators analyzed.
Massachusetts was ranked the third healthiest state in the study. The research found that 12 percent of adults in the state smoke, making it one of the states with the lowest percentage of adult smokers. The obesity rate was 25 percent with 16 gyms per 100,000 people, the study said. While the Bay State was said to have some of the healthiest and most active people in the country, researchers found there are also 74 fast-food restaurants per 100,000 people.

California came in first place as the healthiest state in America. The study found that Californians have the lowest number of smokers and percentage of people with obesity. California does have the most fast-food restaurants of any state with over 30,000 restaurants, the study revealed.
Connecticut was named the second healthiest state, despite it being the home to the first burger restaurant in America in 1895. The state also has 19 gyms per 100,000 people. Vermont was also listed high on the list with the fewest fast-food restaurants per population and 16 gyms per 100,000 people.
