WRENTHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Police departments across Massachusetts are telling residents to beware of pillaging porch pirates this holiday season.
Between Cyber Monday and the approaching holiday season, online shopping is at its biggest this time of year. While online shopping is convenient, it can also leave packages susceptible to thieves.
"A lot of them activate just for these periods of time when they know online shopping is at its peak," Wrentham Police Chief Bill McGrath told WBZ's Kim Tunnicliffe.
He suggests one way to stop thieves is by investing in a Ring doorbell or security cameras since it could make the home less of a target if cameras are visible. Residents can also purchase a porch safety locker to keep their packages secure and deter thieves.

"They have containers now for package deliveries, they have that drop flap feature so the package goes in [and] to get it out the porch pirate would have to spend more time than they want to dealing with it," Chief McGrath said.
He said some police departments are taking action by baiting porch pirates with traps, hoping to catch them in the act.
