BOSTON, MA (WBZ-AM) -- Each month, "WBZ Cares" highlights a worthy non-profit organization, and tells the story of what that organization does for the community. This month WBZ profiles the Franciscan Children's in Brighton, serving children and adolescents with complex medical, mental health, and educational needs.
The hospital collaborates with Maclean Hospital to provide pediatric mental health services and running a day school for children facing complex challenges.
“We are really trying to change the trajectory of these illnesses by identifying really what is effecting the child and how we can prevent it from developing into a more disruptive disorder,” said Dr. Anthony Sossong, MD., Director of Adolescent Mental Health Programs.
“When you need a hand or, need someone to talk to they’re right there to help you,” said Daniel, a patient in the acute treatment program.
Sossong says the treatment they provides can make a difference in children’s lives.
“Franciscans is a special place. I mean Franciscan Children’ s is a post-Acute hospital that specializes in some of these chronic conditions. Earlier intervention can really lead to a massive change in a child’s ability to live the life that they want,” he said.
Another vital part of Franciscan Children's is The Kennedy Day School, which provides special education to students ages 3 to 22, who face complex, multiple challenges. 4-year-old Malik is among them. Michelle Cole is his teacher.
“Every day he is making progress. We were just talking about his imitation skills, patting his tray, and clapping as you can hear right now, vocalizations and sound play.” Cole said.
Malik's father, Fred says that he is pleased with the care his son is receiving at Franciscan Children's
.“I’m really impressed with everything this school is doing for Malik. Ya know I’m seeing a lot of progress in Malik since he started, and happy that he is here.”
