CANTON , Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — It’s been over a month since Hurricane Helene made landfall in North Carolina and cleanup efforts are still ongoing.

Affected communities in North Carolina sent out a list of much needed supplies, and the Town of Canton is answering those requests with a hurricane relief donation drive to support victims of the disaster.

Town Administrator Charles Dooty said this is not typical donation drive looking for clothes and manpower.

“A lot of the stuff surrounds construction, so they need working gloves and nails and tools and generators,” Dooty told WBZ NewsRadio.

Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc in North Carolina in September, devastating much of western part of the state and killing more than 100 people. With the winter season coming up, devices like dehumidifiers and space heaters also topped the list.

“We got a number of volunteers from the community that have come out to help us unload the vehicles as they pull in and unload their items to be loaded on the truck to go to North Carolina," Dooty added.

The truck heading down south is provided by The Armstrong Company, a moving company based in Canton.

“Making a difference in families’ lives is what we do and this is an opportunity for us to give back and help families that have unimaginable loss,” CEO Jim Sullivan told WBZ NewsRadio.

Neighboring communities, including Brockton and Berkley, also donated to the drive prior to Saturday.

“We saw some other communities that had done some relief efforts and it felt like it’s the right thing to do for us for our community, so we decided to do it as well,” Dooty said.
