ORLEANS, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - A cormorant and quahog are safe and sound, all thanks to Wild Care Cape Cod.
The organization said they got a call this past weekend from a concerned citizen saying they'd spotted the large bird with a quahog stuck on it's bill near Tonset landing.
The bird was struggling and exhausted, but Tricia Spicka and her son, Mark, were about to get the bird to safety. Mark used a kayak to prevent the bird from swimming further out to sea, while volunteers in the water including Margaret Emslie and Executive Director and Wildlife Rehabilitator Stephanie Ellis, were able to bring the bird to shore
The bird was transported to Wild Care, where the clam was removed.
"Double-crested Cormorants eat fish, crustaceans and small mollusks," the organization said. "This bird got more than it bargained for, or had its bill in the wrong place at the wrong time. We are grateful that the Quahog and the cormorant get to live another day thanks to kind observers."
The clam was released back into the ocean that evening, while the cormorant was released back into the wild the following day.
