A Group Of Volunteers In Pepperell Act As A Crossing Guard To Salamanders

PEPPERELL, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A group of volunteers are serving as "crossing guards" to some amphibians.

Salamanders and wood frogs are in mating season, which means they need to leave their wooded areas and move to vernal pools.

In order to get the salamanders and wood frogs to their destination safely, Conservation Administrator Paula Terrasi and some volunteers are wearing reflective vest and going out at night to assist them crossing the street.

Terrasi said she has a team that goes out to "stand guard and try to let them cross on their own" or if there are vehicles "safely help them cross."
