BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Following the public outcry over the Boston Bruins' decision to sign defenseman Mitchell Miller, the team has announced it has retained an independent law firm to review the Bruins' player-vetting process.

The legal team will be led by former United States Attorney General Loretta Lynch of the multinational law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, and will review the Bruins' investigative procedures for player prospects.

"This will help us ensure that our process going forward reflects our core values. The Bruins organization will fully cooperate with the independent review team and will publicly disclose the results of the review upon its completion," a spokesperson for the Bruins said.

Last week, Bruins president Cam Neely acknowledged that the team did not do a proper job when doing a background check on Miller, who's entry-level contract was rescinded after the Bruins faced backlash from the fanbase and beyond over his signing. At the time, the Bruins said "new information" had come to light, prompting the team to cut ties with Mitchell just days after he was signed.

Miller was outed for bullying a classmate in middle school by the Arizona Republic which in turn caused the Arizona Coyotes to drop its contract with him in 2020. One instance of that bullying involved Mitchell tricking a student with disabilities into licking a lollipop that had been dragged through a bathroom urinal.

After he was cut from the team, Neely said Miller "had taken meaningful action to reform and was committed to ongoing personal development," before the Bruins offered him a contract.
