BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Chelsea teenager who overcame significant adversity to earn the rank of Eagle Scout was honored at the Massachusetts State House Tuesday.

Chelsea High School sophomore 16-year-old Emily Green, a first-generation Costa Rican, delivered the keynote address of the 2024 Scouting Report to the Commonwealth.

She was joined by young girls and boys from the Scout BSA Spirit of Adventure Council (SAC) at the ceremony hosted by Massachusetts Senate President Karen Spilka and Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr.

Emily and her family faced homelessness during her childhood, moving through various shelters until receiving support from the SAC.

That organization housed Emily and her family at Scout Base Camps until they could get back on their feet.

Through that connection came Emily's exposure to the scouts. "It means everything," Emily said. "I've gone through every rank, I've learned millions of things... it means the world to me."

Emily went on to earn her rank as an Eagle Scout in addition to being a standout student and taking part in many extracurricular activities at Pioneer Charter School.

She plans to attend medical school and become an obstetrician or orthodontist.
