BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Jamaica Plain resident Michael DeMarco credited a community garden in Mattapan for growing a massive pumpkin.
DeMarco’s pumpkin finished in tenth place at a Vermont competition, weighing in at a staggering 367 pounds. Attention grew around the gourd once people learned where it came from.
“People were just surprised, you know. You give a little detail about the pumpkin [for the competition], I said grown in a community garden in Boston,” said DeMarco.
DeMarco said his pumpkin has received a lot of attention after the competition.
“When we were at the weigh-off in Vermont the Secretary of Agriculture for the state was there," DeMarco said. "I think he tweeted it out and people were just surprised.”
Although there were a lot of challenges growing the pumpkin at the community garden, he had a lot of fun while doing it.
