BROOKLINE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Two suspects were arraigned in Newton District Court on Monday facing charges of stealing more than 1,000 pieces of mail.

Police say Yasser Teixeira Mendonca of New York and Dahshein Karon Perry of Massachusetts were charged with receiving stolen property and failure to stop for police.

They were arrested after a high-speed chase in Brookline early Monday morning, then a short foot chase after crashing their car on Newton Street.

Police say they recovered the stolen mail in the trunk of their car that the suspects had 'fished' out of mailboxes in Wellesley.

Asked to comment on the arrests, this resident said it's a sad state of affairs when someone steals people's mail from the U.S. Postal Service. "They must be pretty desperate to steal mail," he said. "That's really sad."

Authorities said the suspects surrendered their passports after posting bail, are scheduled to be back in court on December 19, and could also be facing federal charges.
