CHARLESTOWN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new study reveals that Massachusetts is the best state for women based on a multitude of factors such as life expectancy at birth, median earnings for female workers, and good or better health. According to the study, the top strengths in Massachusetts were friendliness toward working moms and a low unemployment rate for women.
Massachusetts took first place and was followed by the District of Columbia, Minnesota and Vermont, based on the same data from the study.
“Yeah, it does make sense to me, I’m not surprised,” said a Boston female resident. “Well, we haven’t taken away women’s rights like a number of other states,” said another resident.
WBZ NewsRadio spoke to other women who have lived in worked in states that are further down on the list such as Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
“Because I’ve worked in those places, I feel that you’re not quite treated as an equal [as a woman],” said another .

The study also revealed that in these three states, women are not treated with full equality despite recent changes. Across the country, women represent two thirds of all minimum wage workers, and having less political representation in government.
The numbers from the study show that women make up 51% of the U.S. population, but only 25% of the U.S. Senate and 29% in the U.S. House of Representatives.
