Powerball Jackpot Climbs to Estimated $1.9 Billion Ahead Of Monday Drawing

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Someone could be waking up a whole lot richer on Tuesday.

Monday night's Powerball drawing is expected to have a jackpot of around $1.9 billion, the largest jackpot in world lottery history. The cash option would net the winner about $929.1 million.

This next drawing marks the 41st in a row without a jackpot winner. One buyer in Massachusetts did manage to win a million dollars in the last drawing after they got five numbers correct but failed to get the Powerball. That winning ticket was sold at Energy North in Boxborough. Six winners in the Bay State also got $50,000 for getting four numbers and the Powerball.

The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are about 1 in 292 million, but that isn't stopping people from using their own lucky strategies to claim the record prize. WBZ's James Rojas caught up with some players to find out what works, or doesn't work, for them.

"I pick my lucky numbers but every time I pick them they don't win," one person said. "When I pick random numbers I still don't win."

One person said they like looking at signs to find random numbers to use for their lucky numbers, while another said he just likes to leave it up to chance.

"I just cross my fingers and pray," he said.

But what if they are lucky on Monday? WBZ's James Rojas wanted to find out if there was anything people would not buy if they managed to claim the jackpot prize that's worth more than the GDP of 27 nations. Turns out most people won't be getting a new set of wheels.

"I probably [wouldn't buy] a supercar or something like that," one person said. "Cars in the future are all going to be electric like Teslas and stuff, not gas cars."

Privates planes and yachts were also not popular choices.
