BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) – The Red Sox have released a statement regarding the violent incident that took place in the Dominican Republic involving former slugger David Ortiz. Ortiz was shot in the back at a bar in Santo Domingo on Sunday.
"Late last night we were made aware of an incident involving David Ortiz in the Dominican Republic," the team said in an early-morning press release. "David’s family has confirmed that he sustained a gunshot wound to the lower back/abdominal region. David is being treated at Clinica Abel Gonzalez in Santo Domingo where he is recovering after surgery."
Ortiz, born in the Dominican Republic, made his Major League Baseball debut in 1997. The Boston sports icon spent his first six seasons with the Minnesota Twins before a storied 14-year career wowing the Fenway faithful.
In 2004, Ortiz helped the Red Sox break an 86-year championship drought and went on to win it all again in 2007 and 2013.
