SWAMPSCOTT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — In a town meeting filled with back-and-forth arguments, Swampscott residents voted down constructing new pickleball courts in Phillips Park.
Opponents of the project cited noise and parking concerns related to the extra activity the courts would have brought to the park.
Pickleball fans argued the courts would only enhance recreational opportunities in the area, especially for elderly people.
"I don't know why we voted it down," one local told WBZ NewsRadio's James Rojas. "I don't think it would have been a really big deal."

Swampscott residents voted down a similar proposal at a Dec., 2023 town meeting.
Other towns have also cited concerns about pickleball courts.
Braintree, Mass. approved $22,000 of funding in early March to install sound-absorbent panels around its pickleball courts.
