BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A piece of Boston Red Sox history is up for auction.
Lelands, a New Jersey-based sports memorabilia and cards auction house, is holding its 2024 Winter Classic. One of the items for bidding is a game-worn Ted Williams jersey from the Red Sox legend's 1942 Triple Crown season.
Williams won his first Triple Crown that year for leading the league with 36 home runs, 137 runs batted in, and a .356 batting average. He won his second Triple Crown during the 1947 season.

According to the lot description, Williams gifted the jersey to a female fan who was a fixture behind the Red Sox dugout during home games at Fenway Park. The jersey is "near-perfect, with the only alteration being that it was shortened at the bottom by roughly 10 inches to better fit the young Red Sox fanatic," Lelands says.
The auction house photo-matched the jersey to an image of Williams and Joe DiMaggio from Aug. 18, 1942. On that date, the Red Sox played DiMaggio's New York Yankees at Fenway, with Williams recording his 701st and 702nd career hits and 485th career RBI.
The current bid for the "Splendid Splinter's" jersey is $40,721.
Other items on the auction block during the Winter Classic is a 1991 Kentucky Derby Winner's Trophy presented to the owner of Strike the Gold, a 1997-98 Michael Jordan Championship Precious Metal Gems PSA NM-MT 8, and a Roberto Clemente Pittsburgh Pirates game-worn jersey from the team's 1960 World Series Championship year.
Leland's 2024 Winter Classic ends at 10 p.m. on Saturday, March 16.
