WORCESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — If you’re looking for a way to brush up on Black history this February, a Worcester man has the perfect game for you.
Dominique Price is the creator of BlackedOutGame, an adult trivia card game that centers on Black culture through the lens of history, music, movies, slang and more.
The UMass Amherst graduate returned to Massachusetts last year after spending time in Los Angeles and even participating as a contestant on the reality dating show "Temptation Island." Price said he invented the game while spending more time in quarantine with his family.
“And I was like, what if I could create a game that could celebrate Black history, because this was around the [time of the] George Floyd movement,” he said.
He then spent the summer of 2020 perfecting the rules of the game by marking up a traditional deck of cards with magic markers. He said when he was figuring out the logistics, the name of the game resulted from a need for more education about Black history and culture.
"It was going to BlackedOutHistory because it was going to be a game about history that we were never taught or never learned, but then I was like, 'what if I have more fun with it?'” Price said.
The finished product eventually became a mix of historical trivia, guess-the-slang and even a category called "Truth Or Dance." The quirky activities are designed as a way to learn more information through a fun and engaging setup.
“I'm still learning as I go,” Price said. “I didn’t know none of these answers before playing this game — now I'm cheating when I play the game.”
BlackedOutGame can be played with a group of 3 to 20-plus players, and is created for ages 17 and older. If you're interested in purchasing a copy of the game, you can visit Price's website here.
