SWAMPSCOTT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Construction is underway in Swampscott to widen the sidewalk on Humphrey Street. The goal is to make room for more outdoor dining.

The section of sidewalk from Volo Pizza to Kell's Kreme was dug up and protected by construction barriers and tape Wednesday morning.

The work is expected to be finished in a few weeks.

A portion of sidewalk up the street has already been expanded to make room for more alfresco dining.

With the warmer weather on the way, business owners and locals like Kilmer expect the project to attract additional business to the area. "I think it's a good idea," he said. "We've got the beautiful beach over here. It's nice to be able to come out, stay outside, have a nice cup of coffee, and enjoy the scenery."
