ARLINGTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Hundreds of hungry educators gathered at Arlington High School's football field on Tuesday ready to sink their teeth into a giant Italian sub that took up over half of the football field. The giant sub was shared with hundreds of teachers and staffers at the high school who spent the day at work while students had the day off for Election Day.

Sam D'Agostino, manager of D'Agostino's Delicatessen, constructed the 200-foot-long Italian sub to raise money for the non-profit, Food Link, which distributes food that would otherwise go to waste.

"We decided that we want to partner with Food Link who rescue surplus fresh food to give to people in need," D'Agostino told WBZ's Kim Tunnicliffe. "Being a food company we thought that the best way to do that was to create something big."

The Italian sub was made of mortadella, capocollo, provolone cheese, and genoa salami. D'Agostino's used 75 pounds of salami in the sub and 30 pounds of cheese. It took about three hours to make the enormous sub.

"It's a nice way for our staff to celebrate and eat together," Dr. Elizabeth Homan, Superintendent of Arlington Schools, said.

School staff showed their appreciation with mouths full of sub.
