BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Hyde Park man was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly attempting to bring a loaded gun past Boston Logan Airport security, District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced.

Around 7:15 P.M. airport security alerted Massachusetts State Police after discovering a gun on a screening machine at a Delta security checkpoint. The gun was inside a shoebox and covered in a brown paper bag, D.A. Hayden said.

When police arrived, they determined the gun to be a loaded .22-caliber pistol. There were also several other personal items in the shoebox belonging to 36-year-old Lorenzo Beechman, according to officials.

Beechman reportedly continued to his gate with the rest of his belongings alongside the child he was traveling with. When stopped by police, he admitted the package was his before retracting his statement telling police, “No, that’s not my bag. I thought you were talking about another bag."

After airport video footage showed Beechman putting the bag on the security belt, he was arrested and the child he was traveling with was placed in the custody of a relative, D.A Hayden said.

Beechman was charged with several charges in East Boston Municipal Court on Thursday and is being held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on January 4. He has prior convictions involving firearms and masked and armed robbery, as well as several open cases.
