BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A man has been charged after breaking into a Dorchester home on Christmas Eve before being tackled and restrained by the homeowners, District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a statement.

At around 10 P.M. on Christmas Eve police received a call of a man breaking and entering a house on Radford Lane in Dorchester. When police arrived, they found the home's residents holding the suspected burglar down, authorities said.

Police said the residents found Oliver Sampeur, of Brooklyn, New York, rummaging through the kitchen drawers of their home. They reportedly chased Sampeur and tackled him to the ground after he tried to flee the scene, according to D.A. Hayden's office. One of the residents told police they were missing money from their room.

“This was certainly an eventful Christmas Eve for these folks, and an early Christmas surprise for the person who had her vehicle returned, despite the loss of some of her property. Spending Christmas weekend in police custody couldn’t have been pleasant for the defendant, but the blame rests with him,” D.A. Hayden said in a statement.

When officers arrested Sampeur, they found keys to a Jeep that had been reported stolen in his pocket. The Jeep owners told police they were missing a laptop, Apple Airpods, and workbooks.

Police were able to recover $1,152 from Sampeur during booking. He was charged on Tuesday with unarmed burglary, larceny from a building, larceny over $1,200, larceny of a motor vehicle, and receiving stolen property. Sampeur had no criminal record and was released. He was ordered to stay away from the home and have no contact with the family.
