Everett, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — It's official... Encore Boston Harbor is the first casino in the commonwealth to get an in-person sports betting license.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission voted on Thursday making Encore the first of the three major casinos to be approved for legal sports betting in the state.

"Apparently it's going to be just like out in Vegas where you can place actual bets on games," a man named Keith told WBZ's Jim MacKay at the Boston Common, "A lot of my friends you know have a bookie or something like that."

The commission's goal is to have in person betting at Encore beginning in January, before the Super Bowl. The goal is to then have mobile sports betting go live in February.

MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park Casino are still waiting on approval.
