Winchester, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Just because it's cold doesn't mean it's safe to skate.

While it might feel like winter in New England, experts are asking people to stay off of the ice on lakes, ponds, and rivers after two people had to be rescued from the ice in separate incidents in Winchester, Massachusetts and Amherst, New Hampshire.

"The ice is probably not thick enough that it would be wise to go out onto deeper bodies of water," Matthew Belk, National Weather Service, told WBZ's Brooke McCarthy.

The National Weather Service said a prolonged period of cold is needed to make it safe to skate and take out ATVs and cars.

In the next week, New Englanders are going to see temperatures rising, with Boston getting into the early 50s with some sun on Friday, AccuWeather reports. While the rising temperature is good news for those who are sick of the cold, it is not ideal for winter ice safety.

"All of that is going to contribute to poor ice safety," Belk said.

Firefighters said if you witness someone fall into the ice call for help right away and do not attempt to save them yourself.
