BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Mayor Michelle Wu helped out at Shirley Shillingford Pantry's turkey giveaway on Saturday alongside her sons Cass and Blaise. They helped load turkeys and other donated foods onto a truck that will be delivering Thanksgiving food to families around Boston.

Shillingford and her staff of volunteers are delivering 450 Thanksgiving turkeys to those in need throughout the city.

"Every time families go to the grocery store it's sticker shock all over again as prices are going up so fast and so as we're approaching the holiday season where people really need celebration and happiness with all that's been happening the chance to make sure families are secure in this moment is really important," Mayor Michelle Wu told WBZ's Mike Macklin.

Shirley Shillingford opened the food pantry in a small basement in Hyde Park in 1992.

"Thanksgiving at this time families look forward to getting their turkey basket because they wouldn't have money to go out and purchase the turkey plus all the fixings," Shillingford said.

Major Wu called the volunteer operation a "well-oiled machine" from years of successfully giving back and their connection to the community.
