DEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The gift-giving season is among us and some New Englanders have mixed feelings about one gifting tradition.

Depending on where you are from, some call the gift exchange game a Yankee Swap while others call it a White Elephant or Dirty Santa.

"I would at all cost avoid it," Tim from Attleboro told WBZ's Suzanne Sausville at Legacy Place in Dedham.

He said he will not be attending his company's Yankee Swap, but didn't care to elaborate on why he has such a strong distaste for the game.

One man named David said he is a fan of the game and takes it seriously.

"It's fun, everybody's into it, I mean everyone wants to be the number one pick, right, you have ultimate power," he said. "You don't want to be number two, number two is terrible, you know, then you have no power at all."

David said his go-to Yankee Swap gift is alcohol with a scratch ticket on it.

To play the game, each participant brings an unmarked wrapped gift and places it in the pile. Each person is given a number at random and then in numerical order, each person picks a gift. The person who picks number one then selects a gift from the pile and opens it in front of the group. Then, the person who picked number two does the same, but with a twist. They have the option to keep their own gift or swap it with the first player's. As the game continues, each person to open a gift can decide to swap it for one someone has already unwrapped.
