BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Is using AI on your homework cheating? A recent survey reports that half of college students think so, but that's not stopping students from using the homework helper.

A recent survey reported that 51% of college students believe using AI tools like ChatGPT is cheating, meantime 43% of college students said they have used the AI tools to complete assignments and exams.

Among students who say they've used AI tools on homework and exams, 50% said they use them as tools but complete most of the work themselves, 30% said they use AI for the majority of their work, and 17% said they use AI to complete assignments without editing it at all.

"It's really good from a research perspective, a great way for students and faculty to use it, but there's no way to stop it," one man told WBZ's Chris Fama.

Teachers around the nation have been trying to decipher whether to embrace or ban the new technology, and just how to navigate both.

"I have friends who are college professors and it's a nightmare for them at the moment," one man said.

Massachusetts Commissioner of Education Jeffrey Riley said he plans to bring information to the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education about the impact of technology in the classroom including AI and cell phones. This comes as lawmakers around the country discuss where technology's place is in classrooms.
