Nope, that's no prank.
A McDonalds in Lynwood, California is drawing attention after people spotted the restaurant's iconic golden arches (which normally stand for the M in McDonalds) flipped upside down to a W instead. The company says, it's no prank, it's intentional for a "celebration of women everywhere" in an unprecedented statement.
McDonald's global chief diversity officer, Wendy Lewis, said flipping the iconic arches is to celebrate women everywhere on International Women's Day on Thursday.
"In celebration of women everywhere, and for the first time in our brand history, we flipped our iconic arches for International Women's Day in honor of the extraordinary accomplishments of women everywhere and especially in our restaurants," Lewis said in a statement provided to Business Insider.
"From restaurant crew and management to our C-suite of senior leadership, women play invaluable roles at all levels, and together with our independent franchise owners, we're committed to their success."
McDonalds isn't the only major company celebrating International Women's Day on Thursday. Old Navy and Mattel's Barbie, have both debuted products meant to honor women. However, one beer brewer, BrewDog, is coming under fire for their Pink IPA, a satirical "beer for girls." Critics say the company is just using the day to advertise to women.
The restaurant chain says they'll have special packaging and crew uniforms at 100 locations nationwide.
