NEW BEDFORD, MA (WBZ-AM)--Police in New Bedford and Fall River Massachusetts want to trade guns for groceries this weekend at local churches. Shotguns or rifles earn a $50 Market Basket grocery gift card while handguns or pistols are worth $75 in kind.
Authorities say the goal is to collect guns that are not being used and no questions will be asked about where the weapon comes from. law enforcement will be at each of the collection sites to make sure the firearms are unloaded before they are brought into the church. Locations taking part in the program include Blessed Trinity Church in Fall River, and Pilgrim United Church of Christ in New Bedford.
The operation is in collaboration with UMass Dartmouth and is a continuation of gun give-back programs started by the late Rev. Robert Lawrence who died this past October. Sponsers include Southcoast Health, Market Basket, and Dominio’s. Since the mid-90s, the program has collected more than 3,000 guns.
