PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WBZ-AM) — Prosecutors are recommending a three-year prison sentence for a former Providence city councilman who embezzled more than $105,000 from a sports program for under-privileged children.
According to the Associated Press, prosecutors told the judge ruling over the case that the actions of former Providence City Councilor Kevin Jackson are “more severe” than the crimes of former Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox. The former state House Speaker pleaded guilty to charges of bribery and misusing campaign contributions in 2015.
Jackson pleaded no contest to embezzling money donated to the Providence Cobras track program. He also founded the program.
Jackson will be sentenced later this week. His lawyers are asking for probation.
