Plastic Bag Bans Effective Jan. 1 In Lowell, Westford

Plastic Bag Ban

BOSTON (WBZ-AM) — Plastic bag bans are going into effect Jan. 1 in Lowell and Westford. They join more than 70 communities in Massachusetts that are implementing bans.

According to the Lowell Sun, Tewksbury, Wilmington, and Tyngsboro are among those who will have a ban in 2019. Boston banned plastic bags earlier this month.

Some retailers will be selling recyclable paper bags for 10 cents, as well as more expensive reusable bags.

Andover, which also passed a plastic bag ban, is delaying the start date due to September's gas explosions. According to the Eagle-Tribune, the delay comes because there has not been enough education and outreach to restaurants. The expected start date is now March 1.
