PROVIDENCE, RI (WBZ-AM) — The search continues for two fishermen, missing off the Rhode Island coast. One crew member was rescued after the ship ran into trouble early New Year's Day.
The Coast Guard received a distress call from the fishing boat, Mistress, around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. The crew reported they were taking on water near Block Island, R.I.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Andrew Barresi said another boat, Captain Bligh, was the first to arrive.
"They were able to pull one fisherman from a life raft. Since then, we've been searching for the remaining two crew members," Barresi said.
The crew members are believed to have been wearing survival suits. There were some visibility issues at the time of the distress call. Winds were blowing between 30 to 35 knots, with 10 foot seas.
Coast Guard cutters, some smaller boats, and an aircraft from the Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod are searching for the remaining crew members.
