MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA (WBZ-AM) — A four-alarm fire has destroyed a University Drive home in Manchester-by-the-Sea. Firefighters were forced to battle freezing weather, difficult road conditions and a steep hill as well as the blaze that displaced the family that lived there. No one was reported injured.
According to officials the fire appears to have started in the garage before spreading to the main house. They got the alarm at 12:30pm Sunday. because of ice, snow and the steep incline, first responders were forced to look for an alternative route to the house and run a hose through neighbor's backyards in order to reach the fire.
The owner of the home escaped from the blaze with his dog but his house is considered a total loss.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
