BOSTON, MA (WBZ-AM)--Boston based New Balance, in partnership with two other American companies, is providing the military with new made-in-the-USA running shoes.
The new $17.3 million contract fulfills a federal law requiring the military to outfit new recruits with American-made apparel. Congressman from both Maine and Massachusetts have fought for years to have military footwear made in accordance with the Berry Amendment, which requires the home-grown preference.
The deal with the Pentagon is a boost for domestic manufacturing at a time when most footwear bought in the U.S. is made overseas. The first order of 92,000 sneakers is currently being made at New Balance’s biggest factory in Maine with plans for another 248,000 on the horizon.
New Balance has made domestic manufacturing a top priority for years, an effort not lost on its customers. Yearly the company produces 3 million sneakers in the U.S..
