School Fakes Non-Profit Support

LAWRENCE, MA (WBZ-AM) — According to the Lawrence Eagle Tribune , the Massachusetts Department of Education wants to know if the director of a proposed charter school faked letters of support from a number of local nonprofit agencies.

Director Frank DeVito is the head of the Equity Lab Charter School which still needs a state license to open. In support of the license application, DeVito submitted multiple letters from non-profit groups which have now been called into question.

For instance, Director Susan Grabski of the Lawrence History Center sent an e-mail to DeVito accusing him of writing a letter that appeared to have her signature on it — though misspelled. The executive director of the Lawrence YMCA, Dan Halloran, says he has absolutely no recollection of ever writing the letter on which his name appears. Heather McMann of Groundwork Lawrence says she did sign her letter but she thought it was already a done deal.

The Department of Education is now investigating the application.
