WATERTOWN (WBZNewsRadio) - Former WBZ TV reporter Bill Shields received the "Fan Award" at the annual Upstage Lung Cancer event for his courageous and public battle against lung cancer.

The night was full of music, comedy and good friends on a Watertown stage. Advocates, friends and family showed up in throngs to cheer on the former TV reporter.

"I've had lung cancer twice now and I'm still standing because of modern research. You know, 20 years ago I wouldn't have had a chance. And now I do." Shields said.

He battled cancer a decade ago, and remained cancer free for the last nine years. Unfortunately it's back and he's fighting that same fight now, with the same smiling heart and determined spirit.
