HANOVER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A wheelchair tennis nonprofit celebrated its 10th anniversary with a three-day tournament at the Emilson YMCA in Hanover.

The South Coast Wheelchair Tennis Foundation, a nonprofit that promotes wheelchair tennis from Southeastern Massachusetts to Rhode Island, held its very first level four wheelchair tennis tournament. Level four tournaments are typically held for intermediate to advanced players.

For President of the South Coast Wheelchair Tennis Foundation, Thomas Dodd, wheelchair tennis is his passion.

"Locally, and nationally, wheelchair tennis has expanded remarkably," Dodd said.

Dodd said there are around 12 to 20 players on a regular-weekly basis.

Some players even stepped out of retirement for the tournament.

"We have a few players that have come out of retirement to play," Dodd said. "They haven't played in years, so now they're just getting back into tennis. This is probably their first tournament in 20 years."
