BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Atrius Health Equity Foundation, Undue Medical Debt, and the Massachusetts Health & Hospital Association announced a partnership they say will erase $170 million in debt for 140,080 Massachusetts residents.
This partnership will forgive between $50 to $450,000 in debt for low and moderate income residents from Eastern Massachusetts.
"They will include 60,733 residents of Essex County ($71 million), 58,092 from Middlesex County ($74 million), 8,967 from Suffolk County ($11 million), and 4,646 from Norfolk County ($6 million). Additional recipients are from Plymouth, Barnstable, Bristol, and Dukes County. The average debt per recipient is $1,226.73," Atrius Heath Equity Foundations notes in a press release.
Patients will receive an envelope in the mail from Undue Medical Debt on after and including July 7, notifying them on what and how much debt has been erased.
No application needs to be filled out to be eligible for this relief, as those who fall into the income bracket will automatically have the chance to be sent these letters. The debt will also be forgiven automatically, without any extra input necessary from the ones receiving it.
