ROWLEY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — With just days until Black Friday, the Rowley Police Department is giving tips on how its residents can stay safe during the in-person shopping experience.

The RPD made a list of things customers can do to limit risk taking and prevent thefts while scouring for deals.

For online shopping, State Farm provided tips for customers looking to snag deals from home.

For starters, the insurance provider recommends shoppers refrain from making online purchases while connected to a public Wi-Fi network, and opt to use cellular data if possible. Online sites with "https" in the URL are often times safer than those without, as the "s" typically means the website is more secure for handling personal information.

Providers also recommend shoppers stay away from using a debit card for transactions, as it's much easier to regain funds lost to scams through a credit account.
