Alleged Memorial Drive Shooter Set To Be Arraigned On Over 40 Charges

WOBURN, Mass.(WBZ NewsRadio) — The man accused of opening fire in the middle of Memorial Drive in Cambridge back on May 11 has been indicted on dozens of new charges connected to the incident.

Tyler Brown, 46, is set to appear in Middlesex Superior Court Thursday, Sept. 10 on the new charges, which include six counts of armed assault to murder.

Other charges in the indictment include:

  • One count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury
  • Two counts of assault and battery by discharging a firearm
  • Four counts of attempted assault and battery by discharging a firearm
  • Six counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon
  • Four counts of assault with a dangerous weapon on a person over 60
  • Seven counts of malicious damage to a motor vehicle
  • Two counts of intentional reckless discharge of a firearm
  • One count of possession of a firearm after being convicted of a felony
  • Five counts of destruction of property
  • One count of carrying a firearm without a license
  • Two counts of possession of ammunition
  • Two counts of possession of a large capacity magazine

Prosecutors say Brown walked down Memorial Drive in the middle of a busy afternoon commute, firing a multi-caliber FF-15 rifle erratically at people trying to flee the intersection. He is believed to have shot 50-60 rounds before he was shot by a Massachusetts State Police trooper and a civilian Marine, who had a legal firearm.

Two people were critically injured in the incident.

Brown has a lengthy criminal history and, before the shooting, had left prison on parole after he was involved with a shootout with Boston Police in 2020. He had been released from a psychiatric hospital days before the incident.

Prosecutors say, shortly before the shooting, Brown Facetimed his parole officer, who alerted police that Brown appeared under the influence and was holding a firearm.

They say Brown made "suicidal statements" to the parole officer, and that there were "over 70 discharged ammunition casings located" around the area of the shooting.

Brown had already pled not guilty to eight charges filed in Cambridge District Court, including two felony counts of armed assault with intent to murder.
