NORWOOD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — An ammonia leak at a food processing facility on Morgan Drive in Norwood left one person dead on Monday.

The leak, classified as a Tier 2 Haz-Mat incident, began in the area near two men that were working, the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office said in a statement. Norwood first responders arrived and stabilized one of the victims, but the other worker, a man in his fifties, was pronounced dead on scene.

Officials say that preliminary investigation shows there was no foul play in the victim's death, as police reviewed video surveillance from inside the afflicted building. His identity will not be released until his next-of-kin is notified.

The area of the ammonia leak still had dangerously high concentrations of the noxious substance hours after the initial response. Officials say it will likely take hours for investigators to make their way inside.

“The information that we have is that this is an incredibly dangerous situation for the fire, Haz-Mat and police personnel responding. We will be proceeding with this investigation as quickly as safety allows,” Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey said.
