ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Stone-E-Lea Golf Course in Attleboro, Mass. is closing its doors in December after 72 years in business.
In a letter to the community, the family behind the golf course said the decision was driven by health struggles faced by third-generation owner David Lapierre.
"This has been one of the most difficult decisions our family has ever faced. With David's recent health struggles, we know the third-generation legacy he has dedicated his life to will simply be too much to carry on without him giving it everything he has always given," the letter from the Lapierre family read.
Some golfers coming off of the course on Friday were disappointed by the news.
"It's always been a good local course," one man said. "Me and my buddies are up the street and we come here all the time. And to hear that they're shutting down is sad because there's not too many other local courses like Stone-E-Lea."
Another man said that Stone-E-Lea is "not a golf course, it's a family."
"Since opening our doors in 1954, the Lapierre family has always strived to make everyone who walked through our doors feel at home. Some golf courses know your tee time. We were fortunate enough to know you," the family said in their letter.
