BEVERLY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Residents in Beverly are being urged to remain cautious around wooded trails after a dog was attacked by a coyote.

The incident happened Monday afternoon, June 22, near the entrance of Fox Hill Trail on Tall Tree Drive. The dog, a Jack Russell terrier named Cooper, was taken to a local veterinarian for injuries sustained. The incident had the entire neighborhood on alert.

“I got like 29 texts in a row,” Dori Grenert, a neighbor, said. “He got attacked and he was wounded. He’s at the hospital, I think having surgery.”

A coyote was eventually found in a den with their pups about 30 feet from the trail entrance. Beverly Police decided to leave the whole family alone as it is living in its natural habitat.

“She told me that there’s a den behind her house, so I think it was a pack of coyotes, instead of one,” added Dori.

Wildlife experts said that coyotes can be protective and defensive during the denning and birthing season, especially when dogs are around.

Police determined that the incident was not considered a public threat but urged those walking on the trails to stay alert and be aware of their surroundings. The entire event was detailed in a social media post.
