SUNDERLAND, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Two hikers found a dead body on Mount Toby early Sunday afternoon triggering a police investigation and a lengthy recovery operation.

According to officials, the male body was found in a remote area near a cave on the west side of the mountain. Because the trail entrances were narrow, authorities had to use drones, ATVs and snowmobiles to get to the location where the remains were sighted.

Responding departments, including state and local police from a number of towns, multiple of fire departments and officers from the Department of Conservation and Recreation set up a command headquarters at The Mount Toby Acres apartments. The unidentified body was finally recovered around 5 p.m.

Investigators say they processed evidence at the scene as if a crime had occurred.
