BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Boston city councilor is calling on the city to crack down on vehicles blocking crosswalks and bike lanes, making things unsafe for cyclists and pedestrians.
Councilor Sharon Durkan said there's been a lack of consistent enforcement of laws against parking in or blocking bike lanes, as well as crosswalks. This makes it to cyclists and pedestrians are forced into active traffic.
"This is putting our most vulnerable road users at risk, especially elders, folks with disabilities, families and residents who use alternate modes of transportation," said Durkan.
In addition to fining drivers, she wants to hold a hearing to support and identify barriers and examine the potential for traffic enforcement cameras. She also suggested improving ways for people can easily report traffic violations.
"I'm really upset sometimes to see how emboldened drivers can be to hurting and really making a dangerous environment for pedestrians," said Durkan.
Naem and Justin said they have seen bike lanes get taken over by cars and mopeds.
"Dangerous when you have to go into the car lane and the car's behind you and you're like, shoot," said Naem.
"It's downright dangerous," said Justin. "Bike lanes are for the bikes, keep them open and then we'll have less tragedies."
