BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — While golf historically has been a male-dominated sport, more women than ever are playing the game.
In Boston, a golf simulator chain is trying to grow golf while creating more opportunities for women to take a swing at the sport.
Five Iron (5I) Golf has dozens of locations across the U.S. including two in Massachusetts, both in Boston: the Seaport District and Government Center.
5I Head Golf Attendant Nolan Maguire at the Government Center location said June is Women's Month at 5I, and every Wednesday women play for free.
He said those looking to take advantage will want to book online. "During the day, it's not too busy," he said. "But once 4 o'clock rolls around, it's one of those things where you definitely want to book it in advance."
Nolan said 5I has been booked solid for Women's Happy Hour the past couple of weeks. "Free drink when they walk in, and there's a coach walking around that is going to give them some pointers."
One of the goals at 5I is to help women break through the barriers that have made golf such a male-dominated sport. "Women are trying to get into golf and they might not be as comfortable doing it," he said. "We give them a space where they can feel comfortable and everyone shows up and makes it more fun for them. They'll keep coming and playing golf."
5I Golf provides an indoor virtual golf experience for beginners as well as experienced golfers.
Nolan said that 5I is offering women a one-month membership for $5, which is normally more than $300.
