BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio)Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has received a $5 million-dollar gift to support the early detection and prevention of cancer.

Larry and Susan Marx are longtime Dana-Farber supporters and gave the gift to establish the Larry and Susan Marx Chair for Early Detection.

A portion of their gift will be used to fund work being done by Sapna Syngal, MD, MPH, Co-Director of the Centers for Early Detection and Interception at Dana-Farber.

Dr. Syngal's career has focused on building research, clinical, and training programs in cancer genetics, screening, and prevention.

Her research helped develop a patent owned by Dana-Farber that has become part of the national guidelines for estimating risk for hereditary cancer syndromes. "The Marxs' generosity will provide critical resources needed to execute the vision for the Centers for Early Detection and Interception and train the next generation of leaders in the field,” Syngal said.

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is one of the world’s leading centers of cancer research and treatment.
