BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Marijuana sales in Massachusetts continue to reach higher levels.

It was a record year for the cannabis industry, with sales exceeding $1.65 billion in 2025. That's $3 million more compared to the year before. Jimmy from Medford thinks public opinion has definitely changed.

"There's definitely a breakdown in stigma and pulling back on what it means and, you know, all respect if you partake in that grade, if you don't, if you don't, that's okay."

Experts predict 2026 might break more records as the Cannabis Control Commission prepares for potential industry expansion, thanks in part to the approval of social consumption regulations.

"Seems like there's been downturns in public consumption of drinking, especially like in January. So, I feel like a lot of people feel like it's a safe alternative and something else they can do to unwind and relax. And it's a stressful world. Everybody needs a little something, right?" Patrick from Woburn said.

Not only are sales through the roof, but so is the number of cannabis businesses reaching the highest point since adult-use sales began in 2018.

"The public, seeing that it's probably not quite as illicit a product as maybe we were once told, so I think a lot of it has to do with just public knowledge. It's now out in the open where before it wasn't," Patrick explained.
