BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — MassDOT hosted its Safe Routes To School annual awards Monday at the Boston State House, honoring the people and programs who keep school safe for students across Massachusetts. Of those honored, some crossing guards got a massive shoutout.

Cheryl Williams was deemed the Cross Guard Champion of Cambridge for her work in keeping kids safe as they cross the streets in her district.

Parents like Angela Rougas and Alice Murray sang their praises for Williams and how much heart she puts into her work.

“Very sweet, very careful, she stops anyone with a fierceness, she has no fear,” Rougas said.

“She knows almost everybody’s names, and not just the kids, but the adults as well and the grandparents,” Murray said.

Marge Barnett and Brekton Drougas were also honored as Cross Guard Champions for their work in Northampton, and Boston Traffic Supervisor Sagrario Ortiz received this year's Crossing Guard of the Year Award.

Interim Secretary for MassDot Phillip Eng also spoke very highly of all of the crossing guards of Massachusetts

“Cold weather, rainy weather, nice weather, hot weather, they’re out there every day,” Eng said.
