NEWTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new chicken joint hits the block in Newton, reaching across the United States from its roots on the west coast.

Dave's Hot Chicken, which began as a stand in East Hollywood, is set to have a grand opening of its location at 141 Needham Street, Newton on Friday. Prior to opening, WBZ's Chris Fama got a taste of what Dave's has to offer.

"When you order you can go from no spice and you can get it right up to 'The Reaper,' a Carolina reaper pepper that you have to sign a waiver before we serve it to you," said Newton location Co-Owner Bob Quinlan. Quinlan said he tried the spiciest sandwich and that he certainly felt the heat.

"I started getting the hiccups and then sweat started coming out of my forehead," Quinlan said.

Staff at Dave's Hot Chicken said that the fast-food chain originated in California when Dave Kopushyan, a chef trained in Thomas Keller's, set out with his friends to create the perfect hot chicken. Now the brand has locations across the country, the restaurant's website said.

Quinlan says that their different recipe is noticeably better than the competition, mainly accrediting that to the way Dave's Hot Chicken brines their chicken.

"It keeps it as juicy as it can be- and let me tell you, it's hot," Quinlan said.
