DEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Monday marked the first day of former New England Patriot Stefon Diggs’ assault trial.
Diggs was charged with felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault after he allegedly attacked his chef over a financial dispute.
Opening statements were heard at the Norfolk County District Court in Dedham. Prosecutor for the Commonwealth Drew Virtue was first to speak, where he said the victim, Chef Mila Adams, experienced physical assault from Diggs.
“I expect she’ll tell you how she was in her bedroom at his house, how he entered the bedroom, and slapped her,” said Virtue. “I expect she’s going to tell you, how he put her in a headlock, the difficulty she had breathing, that he threw he on the bed, and he left.”
Digg’s Attorney, Andrew Kettlewell, was next to speak, where he simply said the assault the Commonwealth described was fabricated.
“It never happened, it did not happen,” said Kettlewell. “There was no strangulation, there was no assault. There was no incident on December 2, or any other day.”
Adams was next to the stand. During her testimony, Adams claimed she had a complicated relationship with Diggs, that at one point turned sexual.
She said after becoming upset when she wasn’t invited to a Miami trip, she was sitting in her bedroom when Diggs abruptly entered and assaulted her.
“He came in with intent to hurt me,” said Adams. “He came around my neck with the crook of his elbow, and he began to choke me.”
Adams said she didn’t report the attack immediately due to Diggs’ status. Mult statements were ruled out of bounds, including allegations with no relevance to the trial and financial discussions.
The trial is expected to last several days. Diggs is currently an NFL Free Agent after getting released from the Patriots in March.
