DEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Dedham Animal Control announced Monday that it had rescued a young raccoon whose head had gotten stuck in a glass jar.
The raccoon was running out of oxygen when animal control's team managed to twist the jar and pull the raccoon's head free, according to a post on Facebook.
The animal then crawled away, through a fence slat, and climbed up a wooden swing set.
"This gave us another opportunity to spend a bit more time closely observing its health while still maintaining our ability to re-collect it if we felt additional care was necessary," animal control said. "And while we observed it, it observed us, very calmly and naturally appropriate."
The team determined the raccoon would be ok. They also think its family is close by, but it is almost old enough to be independent.
Dedham Animal Control said raccoons are "opportunistic feeders," and reminded the public not to leave food outside, to secure garbage cans and only put them out for scheduled trash pickup.
"And please, take the extra step to keep the lids tightly sealed on empty jars and containers when disposing of them... just in case. These types of rescues don't always go as well as this one did," animal control said.
